Throughout the year, Gore Place offers tours of the beautiful 1806 Federal period mansion with a special twist. During the Jane Austen Tours, visitors join a guide in period costume using Austen's words to describe life in this early nineteenth century country manor house.

Readers love Jane Austen's novels (Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibilities, Emma, Mansfield Park , Persuasion and Northanger Abbey) for her depiction of early 19th century English country life and the mannered world of provincial English ladies and gentlemen.

Austen lived from 1775 to 1817 (43 year). Christopher and Rebecca Gore lived in England from 1796 to 1804. The grand mansion they built in Waltham , Massachusetts in 1806 features both French and English influence in the design and greatly resembles the manor houses described in Austen's novels.

The next Austen Tours will be offered Friday, July 17 at 7pm and Saturday, July 18 at 12 (soldout), 1, 2 & 3pm to coincide with the anniversary of Austen's death on July 18, 1817.

Tickets for the Jane Austen Tours are $12. For advanced tickets, call (781 ) 894-2798.

The English tradition of afternoon tea plays an important part in Austen's novels. Everyone attending the Jane Austen Tours will receive a 10% savings on the traditional three-course afternoon tea service at The Tea Leaf on Moody Street in Waltham . Reservations are required in advance for tea. Call (781) 891-1900. Offer valid through August 15, 2009.
